Session 1:
Introduction and Overview &
Part 1 of the framework
- Framework context including assumptions.
- Overview of the App and Page Set Selection Framework. The framework has three main sections and each of these has three sub sections.
- Starting point: The Unique Person, including AAC goals (including language an culture, sensory aspects and life experience) and broader goals such as wider communication e.g. mobile phone use and social media, and additional functions such as presenting, gaming, environment control. It's not just about AAC! Methods and tools for gathering the individual's goals are covered and referenced.
Session 2 and 3:
Part 2 of the framework
- This is the largest section which will span two sessions.
- Focusses on the Dynamic Display including page sets to meet the individual's goals.
- Representing and selecting the language: symbols, text, visual scenes, scripts, combinations and considerations as identified in session 1.
- Language organisation options
- Layout of the dynamic display, now venturing into access efficiency, vision, processing and motor planning considerations
- Generating the message
- AND additional functions will be covered including youtube, phone use, emailing and messaging. Accessible apps expand the use of a device far beyond voice output communication.

Part 3 of the Framework
- Here we are bringing together the elements to create a functional system
- Considering interface, access and platform
- Hardware and software compatability
- Consumer and dedicated devices
- Operating system and platform

What's Behind the Page Set & App Selection Framework ?
Where Did This Framework Come from?
This initial launch of this framework was in 2021, as a 2-part online presentation for The Australian Group Supporting Communication Inclusion (AGOSCI) in 2021. We realised the importance of this framework and were so pleased to receive positive feedback from highly experienced clinicians and new clinicians alike, who could also see its value. We are so excited to bring you the revised, extended and updated version.
Which App do I choose?
This was the starting point. We know this is a frequently asked question and the number of options available can be daunting if you dont know where to start, whether you are looking for an app, a grid set or page set.
The page set or app is essentially the software for the device. It's what you see on the screen. Device screens are dynamic and there's navigation between pages and numerous functions available in addition to AAC.
We set out to create a framework to assist page set selection, and once completed we could see how it's not just about the software, and having a framework also ensures that the hardware, such as the platform and also any access options, are also considered for the client's needs now and as needs change.
We acknowledge Karyn Muscat for her significant contribution to the development of the framework discussed in this course. Karyn played a key role in its creation three years ago and her insights continue to shape our work in this area. Karyn has moved into private practice.
